Behind the handmade jewelry: ElementsBlog Editor
What is the spark for a great idea? Where does it come from? That is a quite frequent question from our followers, specially while talking about handmade jewelry from Spain.
Our most popular collection, Elements, has a relevant background story that we would love to share today with you. It all comes down to the pure essence of Shiori and it’s intimate relation with nature and the forces that one can sense around us.
As it’s name goes, it represents the four core elements of nature that one can encounter through all the human history such as Ancient Greek, China and some mysterious proto-sciences like alchemy.
The Four Elements
Although in some places they represent more elements or even with some variations, the four that we chose for this collection are the predominants: Water, Air, Fire and Earth.
Human and Nature have always gone hand by hand, creating a unique connection that almost every culture has represented somehow. From Gaia to Mother Earth, nature has always have a relevant impact. Some even believe that each element is intimately related to our personality, philosophy and way of being, manifesting differences according to the connection’ strength with each of them.
That means all of us have some Water, Air, Fire and Earth within, but depending on the grade of predominance, we tend to be one way or another.
This concept is represented with one of our handmade jewelry pieces: the Elements’ necklace gathers the four of them with ancient symbols, making outstanding the main one through the stones colours.
In the Ancient Greek, the four elements were also used as part of a proto-psychological theory invented by Hippocrates around the 129 – c. 200 AC. It is now considered an ancient medical concept called humorism, which was greatly used and studied during the 18th century.
Today, we would love to explain you the meaning hidden behing our spanish handmade jewelry.
The Fire – Choleric or kholé
The warm and dry element is usually seen as aggressive and impulsive, but is also associated to leadership, restlessness and ambition. It is linked to Summer, the hottest season and it has some good and bad qualities:
Positive qualities: vigorousness, zeal, enthusiasm, courage, decisiveness, power of creativity, daring, sedulity…
Negative qualities: quarrelsomeness, irritability, urge to destroy everything, passion, immoderacy, jealousy, voraciousness, vindictiveness, violence, hate, anger, sudden ebullition…
The stones chosen to represent this element are smoky quartz, pink-cherry quartz and citrine.
The Air – Sanguine or sanguis
Some of its positive qualities are vigilance, care-freedom, kind-heartedness, trusting nature, clarity, lightness, independency, dexterity, optimism, diligence, acuity, joy, smiling…
But they are also known for their lack of perseverance, dishonesty, gossipy, backbiting, garrulousness, inconstancy, touchiness, prodigality…
We decided to represent air with amethyst, opalite and pink quartz. It shares some qualities with fire (the warmth) and water (the moist)
The Water – Phlegmatic or phlégma
Of course, water is moist and voluble, and also perceived as cold. It goes with Winter, representing the thoughtfulness and patience of the spirit.
Positive qualities: understanding, placidity, mildness, trusting nature, devotion, mercy, forgiveness, modesty, compassion, fervour, pliancy, meditativeness, internalization…
Negative qualities: indifference, heartlessness, laziness, indolence, rigidity, lack of daring, lack of concern, unstableness, dejection…
Our preferred stones are aqua calcedonite, apatite, aventurine and aquamarine.
The Earth – Melancholic or melaina kholé
Positive qualities: consistency, conscientiousness, perseverance, punctuality, caution, resistance, responsibility, carefulness, firmness, reliability, sobriety, ambition, respectfulness, matter-of-factness…
Negative qualities: stuffiness, superficiality, laziness, indifference, cumbersomeness, touchiness, lack of conscientiousness, irregularity, timidity, scornfulness…
For Earth there is a great variety of stones that we could choose from. Actualy, somehow all the stones belong to earth. However, to represent the conceop we opted for prehnita, green amethyst, smoky quartz and labradorite.
Creating handmade jewelry in Spain not only allow us to build beautiful and sophisticated accessories, but also ones with a meaningful story and a positive aura that everyone can identify with. That gives power and charm to each piece.
This collection is constantly evolving. The first step was the Element rings in gold, combining two stones according to each element. These gorgeous pieces were the base, but we felt like it needed something to gather everything and represent that, in the end, we all have a little bit of each four elements.
That is the reason why we designed the necklace with the symbolic representation of Water, Fire, Earth and Air. Some people might think it is a little bit too simple, but for us it is a harmonic combination of all of them. We also designed the rigid, sophisticated bracelet with two different ending.
The first go was entirely gold, and it came out during autumn, but during summer we decided to include the matte silver to add some variety and play with the warm-cold dinamic. It all depends to your preferences, of course.
Since then, we are working on some more designs since its versatility is almost endless. It is a collection that connects deeply with our core values and keeps us in touch with our true self through beautiful handmade jewelry, which gives an even more personal feeling. As Shiori Jewelry, our brand, which has its origin in nature, this collection has a powerful and inspiring meaning that we are glad to share with you.
